After dating Troy for more than six years everyone was saying your next, your next to get married! He asked me to go ring shopping a year before our engagement but I never wanted to be the girl who picks out her wedding ring. I believe the wedding ring is a representation of your partners love for you and I trusted Troy to pick the ring of my dreams out. Me being me, I did send him pictures of huge diamonds and wedding bands but knowing realistically those rings were way over our budget. Troy and I knew we were going to be together forever and we were in no rush to get married especially since we have been long distance for many years. Troy played professional basketball in Europe and in the NBA D league for four years. The winter of 2016 as we were saying goodbye in the airport of Liege , Belgium, Troy said, “I promise I will make this coming summer the best summer of your life”. I didn’t know how to take it as I was bawling walking onto the airplane back to America.
Troy kept saying we should go on a vacation together. We agreed on California and booked the flights, not one time did I think he would propose to me as he we do not keep anything from each other and truthfully didn’t think he could get the ring without me knowing about it. His brother and sister-in-law were meeting us there to spend the weekend together. We hit Ventura Boulevard, Santa Monica Pier and Venice Beach. Saturday night Troy made reservations at a beautiful restaurant on the Manhattan Beach. Looking back I realize that Troy and his sister-in-law Brizi kept trying to get me to wear a white dress that I packed to dinner but I really didn’t think anything of it. I just thought it was a beautiful dress and that they liked it. We drove almost an hour to dinner and Turell realized he “forgot” his wallet when really it was his trick to have Troy and I alone at dinner. We had eaten a ton that day so once we got to dinner we both were not hungry, we ordered two of the strongest margaritas ever and had a table for two right by the window watching the sun set. Troy told me we had to leave to go meet his brother down on the beach. We left the restaurant and walked onto the pier. I was Snapchatting away and taking pictures and Troy kept trying to rush us and I even began to yell at him because I was enjoying the sunset and he was running in the sand meanwhile I had 6 inch heels on, in the sand. He quickly said someone is here to surprise you and for me to close my eyes, so I trusted him and did. He made me walk backwards and made me promise to keep my eyes closed. Troy and I have pulled off big surprises before but never did I think he would pull off the proposal of my dreams. When he turned me around there was a heart shape made of rose pedals and candles in the sand, he walked me into the center of it and there was the ring box. I was in complete shock, Brizi and Turell were there recording and taking pictures. His proposal was detailed and he was so calm, he didn’t stutter and he spoke for what seemed like ten minutes encompassing our whole relationship and our future together. It was something I will never forget. My best friend asking me to spend the rest of my life by his side, I felt like we were floating. The sunset was bright pinks and purples and the people on the beach applauded as I said Y-E-S and Troy picked me up and spun me around. Troy and I got back to our AirBNB and I called my family, who already knew about it but were just as excited as I was! It is a shocking, emotional time but then you realize you get to start planning the wedding of your dreams with the person of your dreams. Wherever we wanted, invite who ever wanted and do what we wanted. I couldn’t wait to get started.
